Happy Birthday Dad!
Super chill day. Enjoyed a traditional El Salvadorian breakfast at our hotel (plantains, eggs, and beans) and afterwards we went for a long walkabout. The shops, the surfing areas, and the bizarre low-tide but non-low-tide. The coast is full of rocks, but the rocks are only here because of a summer storm (normally the beach is sandy). The rocks are cobbled - they remind me of Yaquina Head in Newport (they even have that familiar sound at high tide). So the pools have the topography of a good low tide but none of the biology. (And to Kristin, seriously… how is it that those rocks are still erect? They look like cobblestones in mud!).
On a side street Ernie asked some locals about surf lessons. The price was right so Ernie asked “what time?”. “Ahora” he said. Ha! We asked for 30 minutes to go back to the hotel and get some things. Given the rocks here at El Tunco, it was better to ride east to the next sandy beach. Ernesto got a few hours of fun and surf on a perfectly overcast day. It was incredibly fun to watch him having an incredibly fun time. No abuelo here.
By the time we got back it was about 3 and the clouds had come in and the heavy rain was on its way. We were both hangry so had long late lunch at El Coyote (yum) and watched both people passing by and a beautiful white and gray cat prance across the rooftops. It was easily the cleanest and healthiest looking cat we have seen since leaving the USA. Perhaps it has never actually been to the street?
Ernesto says “I had fun surfing. And I enjoyed watching the cat on the tin roof that never went down to the street. It was a pretty gato.”
